As cannabis continues to gain popularity both as a recreational and medicinal substance, the means for its consumption likewise continues to expand. From being merely about smokables and edibles two decades ago, we’re now dealing with other different means like dabbing, topicals, and vaping, which we’ll talk about in this article.
How is Vaping Different From Smoking?
A vaporizer works by heating the material (oil or cannabis flower) to a point where it creates vapors for you to inhale. The main difference is that it is at a much lower temperature at around 284°F, compared to smoking which brings temperatures to up to 450°F.
As a result, you don’t inhale the harmful carcinogens brought about by combustion. This is why vaping is considered to be the “safer” method compared to smoking.
Three Different Vaping Methods
Some of you might be surprised at this point, and understandably so. Yes, there are three ways to vape cannabis. One of them even pre-dates the recreational legalization era.
Tabletop Vaporizer
This is the old-school, pre-legalization vaporizer we mentioned earlier. The volcano vaporizer, in particular, has been used in Amsterdam coffee shops. These little monsters are huge, bulky, and far from portable. It wouldn’t be wise to be bringing this along with you unless you’re going on an overnight trip.
It will cost you a few hundred dollars, but it comes with nifty features like temperature control for better precision.
Dry Herb Vaporizer
The dry herb vaporizer is essentially a miniature version of its tabletop counterpart. Similarly, it heats the buds to a point before combustion, allowing you to take in its flavors without compromising your lungs. Likewise, it comes with temperature controls. Some devices automatically shut off after a few minutes of consistent use as an added safety feature.
Dry herb vaporizers are handheld and very portable. Keep them in your pocket and sneak in a puff or two while walking down the street or while watching a movie in the theater.
Oil Vaporizer
This is the most popular vaporizing method today, both for nicotine and cannabis consumers. Also known as vaporizer pens or “vape pens,” these devices are powered by oil cartridges. In the case of cannabis, these cartridges also come in different strain varieties, much like how you’d purchase your preferred buds.
And since they come in a more sleek form similar to a pen, these vaporizers are much more discreet compared to the dry herb kind.
